Butt joins United coaching staff

Nicky Butt has returned to Manchester United as a reserve-team coach.

• Blog: Trio too hot to handle

Former England international Butt, who won the Champions League and six Premier League titles as a United player, is looking to go into management and is following the lead of long-time team-mate Paul Scholes, who worked with the club's second-string side before coming out of retirement in January.

"Nicky is with the reserves," Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website. "He's completed his badges and is just getting a bit of experience with us so there's every chance of that [him going into management].

"He's had a few opportunities to take on jobs but wanted just a wee bit of a chance to revisit the training ground again to get himself back into sync, which we're happy to do because he was a fantastic servant to us. I don't know what his long-term future is but, in the meantime, he's helping out with the reserves."

United's reserves are managed by former Hull boss Warren Joyce but he has been assisted by some of Ferguson's players, with Darren Fletcher helping out when he was sidelined by a chronic bowel problem.

Butt, 37, made 387 appearances for United before joining Newcastle in 2004. One of "Fergie's Fledglings", he came through the club's youth system and went on to win 39 caps for England.

He retired as a player in 2011 after a brief spell with Hong Kong club South China.
