Silva to miss City's UCL clash with Ajax

David Silva will miss Manchester City's Champions League trip to Ajax on Wednesday but Roberto Mancini hopes the playmaker will be fit to return against Swansea on October 27.

Silva, 26, suffered a hamstring injury in Spain's 1-1 draw with France on Tuesday night and Mancini confirmed he will not face West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, or travel to Amsterdam for next week's Champions League clash.

It leaves City short of midfielders for the trip to the Hawthorns with Javi Garcia and Jack Rodwell also sidelined. Rodwell came off in the first leg of the England Under-21 team's play-off against Serbia with a hamstring problem and missed the second match, while Garcia has had a thigh problem since the Champions League draw with Borussia Dortmund.

"Javi, David and Jack [are out] at this moment," manager Mancini said. "Javi is not ready, I think he needs another week. We hope that David can play in the next game - not in the Champions League, but the next [Premier League] game against Swansea."

City travel to face a West Brom side who have only one point fewer than them and who Mancini believes are playing the best football in the league.

He has been impressed with the progress head coach Steve Clarke has made since succeeding Roy Hodgson in the summer.

The Italian added: "I should say many compliments to him because he did a very good job until now. In this moment, I think West Bromwich are the team that has played the best football so it will be a tough game.

"The game after the international break is always difficult. The English players played on Wednesday and are tired."

The delay in England's World Cup game in Poland, scheduled for Tuesday but eventually staged on Wednesday, means Friday's training session is the first for Joe Hart, Joleon Lescott and James Milner but Mancini believes all will be available.
