PSG targeting top spot

Kevin Gameiro is hoping to play a role as Paris Saint-Germain seek to snatch top spot in Ligue 1, at least for a little over 24 hours this weekend.

The capital club take on Reims at home on Saturday afternoon, with current leaders Marseille needing to wait until Sunday evening for their trip to Troyes.

PSG sit three points adrift of OM after the pair drew 2-2 before the international break, but it is Carlo Ancelotti's men who have the better goal difference.

The 25-year-old Gameiro is in his second season at the Parc des Princes, but has found chances harder to come by this term with five of his six league appearances coming as a substitute. He was a half-time replacement for Javier Pastore against Marseille, and the struggles of the playmaker have presented Gameiro with his chance.

"It allowed me to show what I can do and show the coach he can count on me," he told L'Equipe. "I knew the competition would be tough this year, but I never gave up and I give everything to play."

"I will take whatever I can get, 10, 20, 90 minutes, I will give everything to make the coach's life difficult in his choices. I am confident in my head so I know I can do it."

Reims have been one of the great success stories of Ligue 1 so far, defying the odds to sit fifth, just two points behind PSG, following their promotion from Ligue 2.

"It will be a tough match against a promoted team who are out to prove themselves," Gameiro added. "But you cannot lose points against the smaller teams so we must remain vigilant."

Marseille's task is to beat a winless Troyes team who have taken only two points from their eight matches to date. It looks easy, which is why Rod Fanni is warning his team-mates to beware.

"I'm approaching this match very seriously," he told the club's website. "This is not a game you can be relaxed about or you could be surprised.

"We must be serious and I hope everyone is aware of this. This game can be a trap. When they play against Marseille, all the teams, even the smallest, give everything."

Lyon, who sit third one point behind PSG, also play on Sunday when they take on Brest at home.

Reims are sandwiched between fourth-placed Lorient and Bordeaux in sixth, but all that is likely to change by the end of the weekend, with Lorient facing a tough trip to Valenciennes and Bordeaux kicking off the action in Friday night's contest against underperforming Lille, who have only two wins from eight matches this season.

Toulouse will look to capitalise on any slips by that trio when they head to struggling Evian on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Nancy host Sochaux, St Etienne head to Nice and Rennes take on Montpellier.

On Sunday, Bastia are away to Ajaccio.
