Senegal official quits over riot

Senegalese Football Federation vice-president Louis Lamotte has resigned over the rioting which forced a 2013 African Nations Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast to be abandoned.

• Riot hits Nations Cup qualifier
• All eyes on SA; or are they?

The Confederation of African Football subsequently disqualified Senegal from the competition after missiles, stones, bottles and firecrackers were thrown onto the pitch while Ivory Coast were leading 2-0 at the Stade Leopold Senghor.

Lamotte was the match co-ordinator on Saturday and has told the BBC that he is prepared to take the blame for the incident.

"I have to take responsibility for what happened on Saturday given my role as match co-ordinator," Lamotte said. "So I have drawn my own conclusions and resigned.

"It is more the incidents than the qualifying failure (that pushed me to resign). The declaration by the head of state, who felt it necessary to apologise to the Ivorian people, shows these incidents were sufficiently serious."

Senegal, meanwhile, may face further sanctions regarding the use of the stadium in Dakar, while Lamotte says he is prepared to help assist any investigation into the violence.
