Medel released following assault claim

Chile midfielder Gary Medel was detained at Santiago airport after being accused of slapping a female journalist, and has since been released without charge.

Celebrity journalist Natalia Marambio accused Medel, who plays for La Liga side Sevilla, of lashing out in response to her questions about his off-field behaviour.

According to the AS newspaper, other journalists present at the time saw Medel refuse to answer Marambio's questions before pushing her away "with force" when she persisted.

Medel missed his flight to Spain on Wednesday as he was questioned by police, while Marambio was taken to hospital to ascertain the extent of her injuries.

Following investigations, police confirmed that 25-year-old Medel would not be charged over the incident.

"Medel remains free after an investigator ascertained that journalist Natalia Marambio, of a showbiz television programme, did not suffer any form of injury, as she had claimed," a Chilean police spokesperson was quoted as saying by Spanish news agency EFE.

Medel was due to fly to Spain on Thursday.
