Foot op rules Borini out for three months

Liverpool have confirmed that Fabio Borini has undergone surgery on a fractured bone in his foot, with the striker now likely to be sidelined for three months.

• Blog: Cautious optimism over Anfield

Borini, 21, initially suffered the injury during Liverpool's 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last month and the former Roma and Swansea man then aggravated the problem while on international duty with Italy Under-21s, returning to Anfield early.

A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "Borini was assessed by the club's medical team upon his return to Melwood (training ground) and a decision was made for the 21-year-old to have surgery.

"Typically, an injury of this nature requires a three-month rehabilitation period.''

After loaning Andy Carroll to West Ham for the season, Liverpool will be able to call on just one recognised senior striker - Luis Suarez - for the period Borini is unavailable for selection - although there have been reports suggesting Carroll could be recalled by the Reds in January.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers found himself heavily criticised for failing to secure a replacement for Carroll before allowing him to head for Upton Park.

Borini moved to Anfield for £11 million during the summer, and has scored one goal in 11 appearances for the first team to date.
