Barcelona veto Supercopa plan

Barcelona have voted against the Spanish Football Federation's proposal to play next Supercopa in China.

• Barca and Real reach Supercopa deadlock

The club cited 'social and sporting' reasons for their decision to rally against the plan, and not the potential loss of prize money.

Barca spokesman Toni Freixa said: "We're not talking about prize money, but everything seems to indicate we would lose money. But this isn't the reason. In the end we can't imagine an official competition without our members being able to be there."

Freixa also explained the board's vote by adding that playing the Supercopa, which traditionally takes place just prior to the start of the Primera Division, in China "would affect the team's preparation".

A deal has already been preliminarily agreed with a Chinese promoter to play the game, between the winners of the Primera Division and the Copa del Rey, in Beijing at the Bird's Nest stadium.

A statement on Barca's official website says: "Barcelona are not in agreement with the RFEF's project to play the Spanish Supercopa in China, for social reasons and also sporting."

Real Madrid are also against the idea, although the other 18 Primera Division sides are willing to explore options. The power held by the big two, and the frequency of their appearances in the the two-legged game will hold considerable sway.

Barca have been involved in the last four Supercopas, winning three in succession before losing to Real Madrid on away goals this year.
