Cologne want CSL transfer 'madness' over

Benteke wants to give Lambert goals

Christian Benteke has found himself the focus of attention at Aston Villa amid reports of a falling-out between manager Paul Lambert and striker Darren Bent.

Benteke, who arrived from Genk for £8 million in the summer, has been chosen as Lambert's starting striker ahead of £24 million England international Bent, raising eyebrows among supporters.

He has struggled to provide the goals to justify Bent's exclusion from the team, scoring only once, but has vowed to improve that statistic.

"On a personal level, Paul Lambert is the perfect manager for me. He has taken me from Genk and given me a lot of confidence, so I enjoy working for him," he said.

"I want to give him the same back on the pitch. The manager has told me he thinks I can improve as a player and I want to show him that.

"When you are a young player and you know your coach wants you, for your club and for your national team, then it makes it much easier to play and enjoy your football."

Benteke missed a glorious chance against Spurs at White Hart Lane, and skipper Ron Vlaar has said the players are rallying around the 21-year-old in an attempt to boost his confidence.

"I think Christian is most disappointed himself about that miss. It has happened, we cannot change anything about it and we will just have to move forward," Vlaar said.

"Of course, the experienced guys can help Christian now. He knows he had to score that one - you don't have to tell him because he knows.

"He is a striker and he wants to score every chance he can get. He was unlucky, but he will get the next one."
