Jenkinson commits to England

Arsenal full-back Carl Jenkinson has opted to turn his back on a fledgling international career with Finland and commit his future to England.

Essex-born Jenkinson qualifies to play for Finland through his mother and has represented his adopted country at junior levels, meaning he would need to be given the green light by FIFA to switch allegiances and play for England.

However, England manager Roy Hodgson has confirmed Jenkinson has informed him of his desire to cut his ties with Finland and Football Association chiefs have started the process to recruit the promising 20-year-old.

"I invited him to train with even though I was aware that he couldn't take part in this game, but it gave me the opportunity to sit down and ask him the question," stated Hodgson.

"I don't want to trick him to play for England in a few minutes in a game to block him, but he had to make a decision because we're very interested in him, even if the competition is tougher to get him into the England team rather than the Finland team. He made it very clear he wanted to play for England and didn't take a lot of convincing.

"We had a problem with Kyle Walker and wanted a full complement in our training session, so we called Carl up. He was in my thoughts anyway."

Jenkinson trained with Hodgson's senior England squad on Sunday, but was unable to take his place in it for Tuesday's trip to Poland as his belated decision to switch his international allegiances did not give Football Association officials time to get the clearance they needed for him to play.
