Baup delighted with Gignac revival
Marseille coach Eli Baup has praised striker Andre-Pierre Gignac for his return to form this season.
Gignac, 26, has scored five times in Ligue 1 and netted both his side's goals in the recent 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain. Having scored only nine times in his previous two seasons with Marseille, it marks a significant return to form.
Baup, who also managed Gignac during the 2007-08 campaign with Toulouse, told Canal + on Sunday: "He owes it to himself. The most important thing is that he has no injuries. He's in good shape.
"He's a striker and he needs to be in peak physical condition. Starting games helps him, and having his team-mates' confidence does too." Franck Passi, Baup's assistant, added: "I am amazed by what Gignac is doing, especially in terms of the way he is playing with his back to goal.
"He has made great progress. For Toulouse, he often played in a counter-attacking system, always facing forwards. I didn't know he had this ability to play with his back to goal. He is playing very well in the air, too. It's new string to his bow. It's good for him and for us."
