Bierhoff: No farewell game for Ballack

The German FA (DFB) will not give recently-retired former Germany captain Michael Ballack a farewell match, Oliver Bierhoff has told ZDF TV.

Earlier this month, Ballack announced that he was quitting professional football at the age of 36 and, in his first interview after deciding to retire, revealed that he was still hoping for a farewell match.

The DFB had offered Ballack the chance to bring down the curtain on his international career by playing in a match against Brazil in August 2011 - an offer rejected by the player because "it felt like charity".

Bierhoff said: "This would have been a great opportunity to say goodbye in match with loads of fans. He turned down that offer. Therefore I don't see any chance.

"DFB has decided that there will be no more farewell matches for national team players. We had many players, like Jurgen Klinsmann, Jurgen Kohler and others, who were capped over 100 times and did not get a farewell match."

But Rudi Voller, the director of football at Bayer Leverkusen, Ballack's last club, said he had not given up on the possibility, telling Bild Am Sonntag: "We must find a way that it could be possible to organise that match. Everyone should sit down together - the DFB, Ballack and Bayer."
