Police investigate Oldham racial allegation

Police are continuing to investigate an allegation that Oldham winger Lee Croft racially abused a 14-year-old ball boy during his side's 1-1 League One draw at Sheffield United on Saturday.

Croft, 27, on loan from Derby, has denied using abusive language towards the boy but said he did talk to him about wasting time and kicking the ball away.

South Yorkshire Police confirmed after the match at Bramhall Lane that "officers are investigating allegations of racially abusive remarks made towards a 14-year-old ball boy at the football match between Sheffield United FC and Oldham Athletic FC."

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said on Monday that she could not add anything further due to the ongoing inquiry.

Oldham released a statement on Sunday saying: "Oldham Athletic Football Club was made aware by South Yorkshire Police after today's npower League One match at Sheffield United of an allegation of racist abuse by one of its players.

"The player has categorically denied the allegation and the club and his team-mates are fully supportive of him.

"The club understands that the police are making inquiries into the allegation and, as a result, will not be making any further statements in relation to this matter.''

Sheffield United denied making a comment, stating it was a matter for the police.
