Manchester City midfielder Jack Rodwell has been ruled out of England Under-21s' Euro 2013 play-off second leg against Serbia on Tuesday due to a hamstring injury.
Rodwell, 21, was taken off at half-time during England's 1-0 first-leg victory on Friday after picking up a tight hamstring.
Following an assessment by the England medical staff, it was decided that he would be returning to Manchester, rather than being involved in the return leg in Krusevac.
Manager Stuart Pearce was disappointed by the loss but feels he has enough cover in his squad to qualify for next summer's finals.
"We're disappointed for Jack, naturally, but I know what I've got in this squad and I know they're good enough to see the job through," he said.
"We've had a lot of injuries to contend with throughout this qualification campaign so it's not a challenge we're unfamiliar with. I know my players and I'm no less confident in our chances.''
Pearce, who is also without Liverpool defender Jack Robinson and Norwich goalkeeper Declan Rudd, has decided against drafting in any replacements.
