Vukcevic no longer in critical condition

Hoffenheim's Boris Vukcevic, who suffered severe injuries in a car crash last month, is no longer in a critical condition, his club has said.

Vukcevic, 22, has been in a coma since crashing his car into a lorry on his way to training. The Germany Under-21 international was put into an induced coma and underwent two operations.

A medical report showed the midfielder had low blood sugar levels at the time of the accident. He had suffered another car crash two years ago, which also happened when his blood sugar levels were low.

The Hoffenheim communications officer Holger Tromp told 1899aktuell: "We knew about the earlier crash. There were investigations and a medical report with the result that Boris Vukcevic was allowed to keep his driver's licence."

Although Vukcevic remains in induced coma, his condition has stabilised. However, Hoffenheim said it was impossible to put a timescale on his recovery.

Coach Markus Babbel said news of his improvement had boosted everyone at the club, adding: "Above all, this news pleases us for Boris and his family.

"We all know there is still a long way to go. But this news gives us the strength to cope with day-to-day life better."

Vukcevic has played 78 matches for Hoffenheim, scoring six goals.
