Deschamps 'hurt' by Japan defeat

France coach Didier Deschamps is hoping his players can recover quickly from Friday's night's 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Japan.

Shinji Kagawa scored two minutes from time at the Stade de France to leave Deschamps with questions to answer ahead of a daunting trip to the world and European champions Spain in Madrid on Tuesday. But the coach tried not to get too despondent and believes his side played well.

Many expect second spot in the group to be the best France can hope for, and a place in the World Cup play-offs even though they won their first two matches. But the defeat to Japan left Deschamps with plenty to ponder.

"I always hate losing, even if sometimes we do not do what we have to and the opponent is better," Deschamps said. "But that was not the case tonight and it hurts even more.

"I am disappointed for the players because of all the hard work they have put in. We did not have the benefit of scoring, so now we know what we have to face. Now it is time to get ready to recover quickly in order to be prepared for the game on Tuesday.

"We did have a lot of chances to score and, for sure, we will not have so many against Spain. Obviously in this kind of game we have to defend well too, and be able to find the efficiency that we did not have tonight for each chance we get."
