Alaba called up to Austria squad

Bayern Munich youngster David Alaba has been called up to the Austria squad despite club coach Jupp Heynckes saying he is not yet ready to play at the highest level after returning from injury.

Alaba, 20, received the news on Friday after a telephone conversation with his national boss Marcel Koller, and will meet up with the squad on Saturday ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan on Tuesday.

However, it is believed he will only train with the Austria team as Koller is not prepared to risk a player who has yet to play a competitive match since his comeback from injury.

Heynckes had earlier stated that Alaba is not yet ready to play international football but he is believed to have given his blessing to Koller as the two were expected to be having a conversation regarding the matter.

"David is not ready for playing at the highest level yet. Therefore, I believe that [Austria coach] Marcel Koller is smart enough to rely on other players," Heynckes said previously.

The Austria international made his return from injury in Bayern's 2-0 friendly win against SpVgg Unterhaching on Thursday, twelve weeks after suffering a stress fracture in his foot.

Alaba started the match in central midfield - his original position before he was made left-back by Heynckes last season - and he was satisfied with his performance.

"It was definitely okay for the first match, but obviously I have plenty of room to improve," Alaba said. "Every young player wants to play, always. But it's not my call. That's for other people to decide and judge."
