Lineker: Tottenham must reach UCL

Tottenham legend Gary Lineker claims Andre Villas-Boas must secure a Champions League place in his first season at the club.

• James joins Bournemouth

Tottenham meet the current Champions League winners and the club that sacked Villas-Boas last season when Chelsea visit White Hart Lane next round in the Premier League.

Ironically it was Chelsea who prevented Tottenham from playing Champions League football this season after their Champions League win secured the last of England's four Champions League spots, outraking Tottenham's fourth place finish and Lineker says the club has the squad to challenge the biggest clubs in Europe.

"If Villas-Boas is the manager Tottenham believe him to be and he knows what he's doing, then he should produce a team to get the club back into the Champions League. I didn't work out for him at Chelsea for one reason or another, but he has been given another opportunity and we will find out about him. When you look at the squad he has there, Spurs have some very good players and they should be in the mix for a top four finish."

Lineker stated that Villas-Boas will face a tough task in getting the club to improve on the success Harry Redknapp enjoyed during his time at the club and that he was suprised to see Redknapp moved on after bring the club back into the upper echelon of the Premier League after some years lost down the middle of the table.

"I was bemused by what happened to Harry because he had done such a fantastic job at Tottenham, taking them from the bottom of the table and into a Champions League position. I wonder how much further the team can go without massive investment, but that is their challenge. Are they really going to challenge for the title? They sold one of their best players again during the summer and you don't see the teams winning trophies doing that, so they need to bridge that gap before they are in there challenging for the Premier League."
