Edgar Davids Barnet bound

He has played for some of the biggest clubs in the world but it seems Edgar Davids is not quite ready to call time on his career.

• Blog: Dutch antique joins Barnet
• James joins Bournemouth

The Dutch midfielder has agreed to join League Two strugglers Barnet in one of the most surprising moves of the 2012 season with the transfer undoubtedly the most high profile in the club's history.

Davids, 39, is one of the most recognisable players in world football, which has only increased in recent years given the unique protective eyewear he wears due to his glaucoma condition.

Davids has spent his time at high profile clubs such as Barcelona, Milan, Inter Milan, Ajax and Tottenham and has won numerous league titles, UEFA Cup and Champions League crowns.

Barnet will hope some of that success rubs off, with the club yet to win a game this season and currently sitting last in the bottom tier of England's Football League.

Davids has remained living in London since his failed attempt to resurrect his career with Championship side Crystal Palace, where he managed six games. Davids' role at the club will be one of player/coach and his signing was confirmed on the club's official Twitter feed late on Thursday evening.

"Dutch legend, former Barcelona, Juventus, Ajax and Milan midfielder Edgar Davids joins Barnet and becomes joint head coach with Mark Robson," the club tweeted.

Joint head coach Robson told the club's website that he was looking forward to working with the football legend.

"I am delighted to welcome Edgar to our club. His experience as a player throughout his illustrious career will be a massive benefit to all our players and I look forward to forming a strong partnership with him."

On his own Twitter site, Davids wrote: "Happy to say I will join my local football club Barnet FC as a player/coach."

Barnet chairman, Tony Kleanthous hailed Davids' acquisition as a sign that exciting times are ahead for the North London club.

"I am absolutely delighted to welcome Edgar as part of our exciting set up at Barnet FC. We have world class training facilities that are now attracting world class players and I feel, despite recent results, that these are exciting times ahead for our club."

Barnet are set to welcome Plymouth to their Underhill home on Saturday, with Davids set to pull on the Barnet kit for the first time.
