Wigan keen to avoid international malaise

Gary Caldwell has said he believes it will be difficult for Wigan to avoid suffering another post-international break hangover when they travel to Swansea on October 20.

The Latics, whose squad includes players from five continents, have a habit of suffering poor results after their stars have made long journeys to play international matches.

And captain Caldwell says that makes life tough for manager Roberto Martinez, who does not have the options of his counterparts at bigger clubs.

"I think it's difficult," he said. "You see the big clubs with their big squads, and after international breaks they can rotate a lot of their players.

"Unfortunately, we don't have that luxury as a squad. It's up to us as individuals when we come back to make sure we are 100%. Every player needs to do that."

Wigan lost 4-0 at Manchester United straight after the September international break, and last season they were beaten 2-0 at home by Swansea.

Martinez started that match with Senegal's Mohamed Diame, Nigeria's Victor Moses and Colombia's Hugo Rodallega on the bench after each had been away.

All three have now left the club, but Wigan's squad still includes Oman goalkeeper Ali Al Habsi, Paraguay defender Antolin Alcaraz, Honduras international Maynor Figueroa, Chile wing-back Jean Beausejour and Ivory Coast striker Arouna Kone.

Caldwell, who is set to represent Scotland against Wales and Belgium, added: "When you come back, you have to be ready to fight for Wigan.

"The travelling can be difficult, but you want to be an international footballer and so have to ready all the time."
