MLS chief would welcome Lampard

Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard would be more than welcome at any team in Major League Soccer, according to its commissioner Don Garber.

• Lampard to miss San Marino game

Lampard, 34, is in the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and with the club unlikely to offer him anything more than a one-year extension, speculation is rife that he is set for an exit at the end of the season.

The England international has long been linked with a move across the Atlantic to follow in the footsteps of the likes of David Beckham and Thierry Henry.

And MLS commissioner Garber has said Lampard would not be short of options should he decide the USA is the place for him to end his career.

"Frank Lampard's a great player. He has a great history with the sport," Garber said.

"If he decides he wants to play in Major League Soccer, I'm sure any club would be happy to have him on their roster.''

Garber was speaking on Wednesday at the Leaders in Football Conference at Stamford Bridge and when asked if he would exploit that opportunity, he said: "I'll go into the locker room and see if I can chat him up...''

The MLS commissioner would be involved in any future negotiations involving Lampard and the MLS due to the player needing an exemption from the league's salary cap.

However, Garber revealed that he was unaware of any of his clubs making an approach for the player as of yet.

"Frank would probably fall in the 'Designated Player' category,'' he added. "That's a discussion that starts with ownership at the local level, and the league certainly would be involved at some point.

"But a local team owner would have to decide that they would want him on their team.''
