Barcelona to appeal Busquets ban

Barcelona are to appeal the two-match Champions League ban handed out by UEFA following the midfielder's sending off against Benfica last week.

Busquets received a straight red card from Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir for apparently leading with his elbow in a challenge as tempers on both sides flared late in Barca's 2-0 victory at the Estadio da Luz in the Group G clash.

Europe's governing body set the two-game penalty on Tuesday, but the Catalan club have now decided to ask them to look at the case again, according to a statement released via their official website on Wednesday afternoon.

"FC Barcelona have chosen to appeal this Thursday the decision of UEFA's disciplinary commission to suspend Sergio Busquets for two matches after his sending off during the second round of group matches in the Champions League," the statement said.

If the appeal is not successful Busquets will miss his club's two games against Scottish champions Celtic on October 23 at the Camp Nou and November 7 at Celtic Park.

Busquets's absence for these games would likely give summer signing Alex Song an opportunity to prove himself in Barca's 'pivote' position deep in midfield.
