Trapattoni dismisses Blackburn talk

Giovanni Trapattoni has dismissed talk he is set to leave the Republic of Ireland job to manage Blackburn Rovers as "chit-chat".

• Rovers to sound out Shearer
• Bolton sack Coyle

The 73-year-old Italian had been linked with the Ewood Park vacancy following Steve Kean's resignation last month, with Trapattoni's name appearing alongside the likes of Bernd Schuster, Alan Shearer and Tim Sherwood as potential candidates.

However, Trapattoni insists he has not spoken with anyone about the role and is fully focused on leading Ireland through a third qualifying campaign.

Ireland have a World Cup qualifier against Germany on Friday before they travel to face the Faroe Islands next Tuesday.

"I'm not aware of it," he said. "It must be agent chit-chat. I'm not interested anyway. I am concentrating on the task in hand."

Raddy Antic and Javier Clemente are the latest names to be linked with the vacant position, according to ESPN sources.

Alan Shearer and Tim Sherwood remain the favourites as Blackburn try again to seek permission from Spurs to talk with Sherwood, while the club plan to approach Shearer to invite him to an interview.

According to sources Shebby singh, global advisor to Blackburn owners Venkys, will attempt to make contact with Shearer and also make a final attempt to contact Spurs chairman Daniel Levy in a bid to talk with Sherwood.

In the meantime, Singh has been inundated with candidates, including Sven-Goran Eriksson, Bernt Schuster, Albert Ferrer and ex-Lazio coach David Ballardini.

The ESPN source said: "Shebby cannot believe how many big-name coaches have been in touch or there have been agents on trying to place them at Blackburn.

"He is sorting out his short list now and will start the interview process this week.

"He would love to appoint someone like Glenn Hoddle or Juergen Klinsmann but neither would be interested."
