Footballer faces ban after shop crash

A Belgian footballer is to be banned from driving for two weeks after he crashed his sports car into a petrol station shop.

Jonathan Legear, who plays for Russian club Terek Grozny, will appear in court after the incident, in which one person in the shop was hurt.

Security footage showed the player's Porsche crashing through glass doors at the front of the shop in Tongeren, Belgium.

The car ploughed through shelves of food and drink before coming to a halt close to the counter and forcing Jeffrey Dewallef, a customer who was waiting to be served, to jump clear.

Legear, who has two caps for Belgium, issued an apology through his lawyer in which he denied being "severely drunk", but court spokesman Michel Zegers said he would be charged with involuntary assault and potentially intoxication.

The spokesman said Legear would be able to return to Grozny "as long as he does not drive there himself".

Legear's statement said he would "accept the consequences of the accident according to the law".
