Lloris eager to become a regular starter

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has admitted he needs more time to settle into his post at Spurs, but requires regular football to play at his best.

• Blog: Spurs more suited to big guns

After playing the understudy to Brad Friedel for the opening six games of the season, Lloris earned his first start in the Premier League in Sunday's 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

When Spurs made a late play for Lloris in the summer transfer window, the pressure was on manager Andre Villas-Boas to choose between custodian Brad Friedel and Lloris for the No.1 spot.

Lloris conceded he can only make an impact by getting match time, and would like to be the preferred choice in goals.

"I was used to playing in games every three days with Lyon. And to progress, to be effective, it's better to play every week," Lloris said. "Over the past month, I've played only three games. It takes a little more concentration, especially working at training. I try to compensate, but the truth is the game on the weekend [is most important].

"From the moment I signed for Tottenham, I have invested 200 per cent. I show it every day in training with a lot of enthusiasm because all this is new to me and especially because it is the Premier League, certainly the best league in Europe.

"I am getting my bearings and I hope to play more and more, to be at my best. I still need a few games to find my rhythm."

Despite keeping the club's first clean sheet in the Premier League this season against Villa, Lloris is no certainty to maintain his place in the starting lineup for Tottenham's clash with Chelsea after the international break.

The 25-year-old has joined the French national team ahead of a friendly against Japan and the World Cup Qualifier against Spain. He will be hoping to return to good news at White Hart Lane, but sympathises with Villas-Boas's selection dilemma.

"It has not been complicated for me. I have always been ready to play and that's the most important thing," Lloris said. "The coach has made his choice. I must stay focused, as I have done before with Nice, Lyon and the France team. I am not worried by the situation.

"When you sign for a club at the last minute, it's never easy. The negotiations were protracted. I made the choice to come."
