Mourinho: Ref made a big mistake

Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was again critical of the referee's performance during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Barcelona, but his claims were swiftly dismissed by Tito Vilanova.

Two goals apiece from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo meant a share of the spoils at the Camp Nou, with Barcelona retaining their eight-point lead in the Primera Division standings.

Much of the attention post-match was on two controversial moments early in the second half when, with the score at 1-1, referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro first waved away a Madrid penalty appeal after Mesut Ozil tumbled over Javier Mascherano's challenge inside the area and then dismissed Barca calls for a spot kick when Pepe halted Andres Iniesta's run on the edge of the box.

Mourinho said it went against his club's traditions to complain about referees but then went on to do just that.

"Madrid is a gentlemanly club and penalties not signalled cannot be talked about," Mourinho said. "This is the philosophy of the club and I must adapt to it, although I like the truth. Delgado is a good referee, but at a deciding moment of the game he made a big mistake. That can happen to anyone."

Speaking to Spanish TV immediately after the game, Madrid centre-half Pepe said he felt his team had been hard done by during the game, and accused Iniesta of deliberately trying to deceive the officials.

"Karim (Benzema) had a chance and then there was maybe a penalty on Ozil," Pepe said. "(Iniesta) looked for me in the area and then he threw himself down and rolled over and over. They are like that - very theatrical."

At his post-match press conference, Barca coach Vilanova accused the Madrid camp of selectively choosing refereeing incidents to get outraged about.

"He may not want to talk about referees, but Mourinho has already spoken," Vilanova said. "For Madrid's second goal there is a clear foul on Iniesta. He has told me that. If we are going to talk about the officials, we should analyse everything, not just what suits us. Pepe said we are actors? We can make a video of his kicks."

Xavi Hernandez was also dismissive of Real's complaints when he was asked about the Ozil incident on TV after the game. "Penalty? What penalty?" was the Catalan playmaker's short response.
