Rovers ready to sound out Shearer

Blackburn Rovers are ready to contact Alan Shearer about the vacant manager's position at Ewood Park after he confirmed he would be interested in taking the job.

• Shearer open to Rovers approach
• Schuster, Solskjaer in contention

Shearer said on Saturday that he would "absolutely" be willing to talk to Blackburn about the vacancy left by Steve Kean's sacking last month and Shebby Singh, global advisor to owners Venky's, will try to speak to the former England captain on Monday.

Singh plans to interview three or four candidates when he draws up a shortlist, which will also include Tim Sherwood - despite Tottenham being unwilling to release him from his coaching position at present - and Roy Keane.

Italian David Ballardini, the one time Lazio coach is also available, while ex-Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster is another favoured candidate, though his salary demands could push him out of the equation.

A Blackburn source told ESPN: "There is no doubt that the Blackburn owners would like to assess the possibilities of Alan Shearer taking the job."

Shearer scored a Premier League record 34 goals in Blackburn's title-winning season in 1994-95 and Graeme Le Saux, a former team-mate of Shearer at Ewood Park, told the BBC: "It sounds like Alan Shearer would quite like the job. He's leaving the door wide open.

"If the owners are going to look at appeasing the fans then anyone linked with the club through the success that we had in the 90s would be a good starting point.

"But the fundamental problems with the club go far deeper than that. It's important the Venky's learn from the mistakes they've made and get in a proper structure of professional people. That goes all the way through the business. The manager is then part of that system."

Shearer failed to save his beloved Newcastle United from relegation in his short spell there in 2009, and later had talks with Cardiff before deciding to stay in his job as a TV pundit on the BBC's Match of the Day programme.
