Cole launches attack on FA

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo and press officer Steve Atkins discuss Ashley Cole's controversial tweet on Friday morning.

Chelsea defender Ashley Cole seems certain to face a misconduct charge after launching a foul-mouthed tirade against the Football Association on Twitter.

• 'No credible basis' for Terry defence
• Blog: Terry storm to continue

Cole used his official Twitter account to respond to the publication of the independent panel's report into the John Terry racism verdict, in which Cole's reliability as a witness was called into question.

While Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo was fielding questions in his weekly pre-match press conference at the club's Cobham training ground, Cole took to the social networking site to tweet the following: "Hahahahaa, well done #fa I lied did I, #BUNCHOFTW***''.

In its written reasons for the punishment handed to Terry, the tribunal panel said it had "considerable doubts" about evidence given in support of Terry by Cole, suggesting it "evolved".

The document released on Friday says the Chelsea left-back added the word "black" into a witness statement outlining what he claimed to have heard Anton Ferdinand saying to Terry at a later date.

In August, Rio Ferdinand was fined £45,000 by the FA for using the phrase 'choc ice' in reference to Cole on Twitter, and Ryan Babel was fined £10,000 over Twitter criticism of Howard Webb.

Later on Friday, the tweet from Cole's account was deleted, having received several thousand retweets.

Asked about Cole's tweet, Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo said: "We'll look at the tweet and then we'll see. Apart from this, I don't think the players are out of control.''
