Olsson ready to pledge future to Baggies

West Brom defender Jonas Olsson is considering performing a major U-turn by committing his long-term future to the club.

• Odemwingie keen to make amends

Olsson, 29, seemed intent on leaving the Hawthorns in August, with a £4 million move to Spurs set up, but Harry Redknapp's departure from White Hart Lane scuppered the deal.

Now the Sweden international now looks to be moving towards signing a new contract with the Baggies, just months after Albion feared losing him.

Olsson is mulling over a potential new deal after negotiations were opened between his agent Martin Dahlin and Albion's sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth.

Dahlin was at the club's training ground on Wednesday and Albion head coach Steve Clarke is hopeful a new deal can be agreed.

Clarke said: "Jonas' discussions are ongoing. The fact that his agent was here tells you that. In the matches he has played since I have been here, Jonas has been terrific. The contract talks certainly haven't been playing on his mind."

One of the main reasons for Ashworth being retained until the end of the season, before taking up his post with the Football Association at St George's Park is for him to deal with outstanding contract issues and the January transfer window.

Olsson is the only one of Clarke's key players who has not signed a long-term deal with the club and is in the final year of his current contract.

Before the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, Olsson told Albion he would make a decision on his future after the tournament.

At the time, sources close to the player suggested Olsson was ready keen on finding a new challenge away from the Hawthorns, but potential moves were hampered by Albion demanding a fee in the region of £6 million.

Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray retain an interest in the centre back, who joined Albion for just £600,000 from Heerenveen under former boss Roberto Di Matteo.
