El Shaarawy and Abbiati shine for Milan

Stephan El Shaarawy became AC Milan's youngest-ever Champions League goalscorer in the 3-2 win at Zenit St Petersburg on Wednesday.

• Blog: Rossoneri rule in Russia

El Shaarawy, at 19 years and 342 days old, was the first teenager ever to net for the Rossoneri in the competition - but goalkeeper Christian Abbiati took the majority of the plaudits from coach Massimiliano Allegri.

Allegri told Sky Italia: "I have to praise the lads, as we kept looking for the win throughout the match. Abbiati made some great saves, both in the first and second half.

"He is an excellent goalkeeper who, in my two years here at Milan, has done great things. Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, but a goalkeeping error is always highlighted more than any other."

Abbiati told Milan's official website: "My second half stops were important in terms of how the game ended - I was happy, and that was why I celebrated like I did.

"But I don't read the papers, whether I'm playing badly or whether I'm playing well. If I've been with the club for as long as I have, there must be some reason why.

"Everyone did well, as we played as a team. It's tough to win away from home in the Champions League and we did it. It was important to get a result here, and that's what we did."
