Rooney and Carroll back for England

Roy Hodgson can call on Wayne Rooney and Andy Carroll for the first time in England's World Cup qualifying campaign after both recovered from early-season injuries to be included in the England squad.

• Hodgson: End of the line for Rio
• Celtic's Forster to get England call

Manchester United's Rooney and West Ham's Carroll missed the Moldova and Ukraine qualifiers, which brought four points for England, but both are named in the squad for the matches against San Marino and Poland.

Hodgson has included Stoke City central defender Ryan Shawcross in an England squad for the first time since 2010 and has also named Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster, who gets a first senior international call-up, in his 25-man party.

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon is included for the first time since 2010 after impressing in the Londoners' start to the Premier League season, while Arsenal's Kieran Gibbs is back in the picture after returning to fitness.

Hodgson, however, has become embroiled in controversy after reportedly telling football fans that Rio Ferdinand's days as an England player are over.

Ferdinand missed out on selection for Euro 2012 for "football reasons", and reports claim Hodgson spoke about the issue while travelling to Arsenal's Champions League clash against Olympiakos by London Underground on Wednesday evening.

"I very much doubt [Ferdinand will play for England again]. He hasn't played for England for quite a while," he was quoted as saying in the Daily Mirror.

"I have to say it is over for him and England. It has got to be the end of the road. He is pushing 34 and hasn't played for England for a long, long time."

Hodgson is facing a PR disaster over the comments, particularly after a void was created in the England squad following the sudden retirement of John Terry from international football last week.

The squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Fraser Forster (Celtic), Joe Hart (Manchester City, John Ruddy (Norwich City).

Defenders: Leighton Baines (Everton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Kieran Gibbs (Arsenal), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City), Kyle Walker (Tottenham).

Midfielders: Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Tom Cleverley (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Adam Johnson (Sunderland), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Theo Walcott (Arsenal).

Forwards: Andy Carroll (West Ham), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United), Danny Welbeck (Manchester United).
