Masiello in 22-month suspended sentence

Former Bari defender Andrea Masiello has received a 22-month suspended prison sentence after admitting to scoring an own goal during a relegation decider.

Masiello, 26, confessed to deliberately deflecting a shot from Lecce striker Jeda into his own net while playing for Bari, during the Derby of Puglia in May 2011.

Bari had already been relegated but the defender's deflection handed a 2-0 victory and Serie A survival to Lecce, who subsequently found themselves demoted to the Lega Pro this season for their involvement in match-fixing.

Masiello, who is without a club since leaving Atalanta earlier this year, negotiated a plea bargain at the tribunal in Bari in order to avoid jail time, while his associates Gianni Carella and Fabio Giacobbe were both handed 17-month suspended sentences.

"Andrea Masiello just wants to live in peace and not have to keep talking about himself," the player's lawyer told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Doubts were also raised over Bari's last four games of the 2010-11 campaign, with the results of those matches having a direct effect on the relegation positions and qualification for Europe.

The club had to start their Serie B campaign this season with a seven-point penalty deduction following the investigation into the 'Calcioscommesse' scandal , that also saw Juventus manager Antonio Conte suspended for ten months.
