Garcia rues Lille's lack of killer instinct

Another miserable night of Champions League action left Lille coach Rudi Garcia to reflect on his players' lack of killer instinct after they created more chances than their opponents, Valencia, but lost 2-0.

Lille needed a result in Spain after their 3-1 home defeat against Bate Borisov in the previous round of games, but they have been left pointless and rock bottom of Group F with the prospect of a daunting double-header against last season's finalists, Bayern Munich, soon arriving.

Valencia managed to score twice through Jonas, despite only managing three shots on goal, but Garcia's players are visibly lacking confidence and the defeat leaves them hovering over the Champions League exit door, especially after Bayern's surprise defeat in Borisov left them needing points off the French side to qualify.

"Unfortunately, we failed to get our shots on target although I had made a point of underlining how important that was and Valencia made their chances count," Garcia said.

"They were ahead at the break, then our second half was not good enough for me and to crown the evening Mathieu Debuchy was sent off. It was not a good night. We have to break this cycle quickly and win a match.

"I hope that will happen on Saturday [against AC Ajaccio]. Big teams bounce back. Let's see if we have the quality to do that."

With another disappointing result, Lille have almost no chance of qualifying for the knockout round, but finishing in third and earning a place in the Europa League will also be difficult to snatch too.

Goalkeeper Mickael Landreau, however, remains confident of the French side's ability to qualify, saying it ''is still possible, even if (it is) difficult.'' While Debuchy agreed, adding Lille ''still has a chance, we have to believe it."
