Secure Olsson's future, says Foster

West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster wants the club to secure the long-term future of Jonas Olsson.

Foster is keen for the Baggies to avoid the possibility of their central defensive partnership being split up when 29-year-old Olsson's contract expires at the end of the season.

The former England goalkeeper believes the alliance between Olsson and Gareth McAuley deserves to be ranked among the best in the Premier League, and says it has been key to the club's excellent start to the season.

Olsson, signed for £600,000 from Dutch club Heerenveen, is in the final year of his contract, and no decision on his long-term future has been made.

Speaking after the 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Sunday, Foster said: "They are absolute warriors. You know they are going to block everything, head everything and kick everything. They have been that way since the middle of last season.

"They took some serious knocks on Sunday, and they have got bumps and bruises all over. But they will always be in there fighting for you and it's nice to have two people like that in front of you.

"I don't think there are many better centre-back pairings in the Premier League. They play week in and week out. I don't think they've missed a game for a good long time."

Olsson almost left during the summer, seeming set for a £4 million switch to Spurs before the then White Hart Lane manager Harry Redknapp was relieved of his duties.

The centre-back is believed to be reluctant to sign a contract extension and is thought to be planning to leave as a free agent at the end of the season.
