Don't be ridiculous, Lille players told

Lille president Michel Seydoux has urged his players to be "less ridiculous" as they attempt to get their Champions League campaign back on track in Valencia.

The club crashed to a 3-1 defeat at home to BATE Borisov in their opening European match and have endured a disappointing start to the season both domestically and in Europe.

Lille were French champion in 2010-11 and finished third last season, but Les Dogues have won only once in seven domestic games so far this time and lie 15th in the table.

The loss of Eden Hazard to Chelsea in the summer has also been a blow - "I would have liked to keep him, but it was an impossible dream," Seydoux said - while new arrivals Marvin Martin and Salomon Kalou have yet to hit form. Both are out for the Valencia game, as is the captain Rio Mavuba, who has suffered a knee injury. ''He is never injured, and it had to happen now,'' Seydoux told L'Equipe.

But the Lille president added: ''We have no pressure, no obligation on the result, no risk. A draw would be a good result. Our aim is to be less ridiculous in this tournament, less ridiculous than two weeks ago against Borisov. I expect my team to be dignified."

Lille have still to face Bayern Munich, last season's Champions League runners-up, in Group F.
