PSG climb up to second

Kevin Gameiro's first-half double ensured Paris St Germain continued their excellent recent form with a 2-0 victory over Sochaux.

Gameiro, who had only played 74 minutes this season before this game, opened the scoring in the 10th minute with the first real opportunity of the match.

The France international increased his chances of a regular starting berth by doubling his tally 12 minutes before the interval and although the hosts had several chances in the second half, they could not increase their margin of victory.

The win moved PSG up to second in the table behind Marseille, for 24 hours at least.

Montpellier breathed new life into their stuttering start to the season with a morale-boosting 2-0 win on the road at Nancy.

The reigning Ligue 1 champions had won just one of their opening six matches, but second-half goals from Younes Belhanda and Souleymane Camara were enough to lift Montpellier into the relative respectability of mid-table.

Defeat for Nancy is their sixth on the bounce in all competitions, and leaves them mired inside the relegation zone.

Lorient preserved their unbeaten record thanks to Gilles Sunu's 85th-minute goal earning a 1-1 draw at Evian.

The visitors had trailed for almost the whole game after Saber Khelifa's early goal. Lorient's prolific attack had not been shut out in any game this season, though, and Sunu preserved that record with a classy finish to salvage a point which keeps his side fourth.

Second-half goals from Wissam Ben Yedder and Emmanuel Riviere got Toulouse back to winning ways as their strong start to the season continued with a 2-0 victory at Troyes.

The winless hosts had slightly the better of a goalless first half but Le Tefece took the initiative after the break when Ben Yedder broke the deadlock. Defensive indecision gifted the second goal to Riviere and that was enough for Toulouse, who have now won three of their opening seven games with their only defeat coming against in-form Paris St Germain.

Nice are fast becoming the draw specialists after twice surrendering a lead at home to Bastia to record their fifth tie in seven games this season, this time 2-2.

Goals from Dario Cvitanich and Renato Civelli twice looked to have set Nice on their way to only a second victory of the campaign, but both times they were pegged back through goals from Jerome Rothen and Anthony Modeste.

The result leaves Nice in mid-table on eight points, one more than Bastia who brought to an end a run of four successive defeats with today's draw.

Mehdi Mostefa's second-half strike gave Ajaccio all three points as they moved above Brest in the table with a 1-0 win.

The Algerian's 55th-minute volley deflected off Brest defender Paul Baysse and into the top corner as Ajaccio extended their unbeaten run against today's opponents to 11 games.

Ajaccio are now on nine points after seven matches, the same as Brest, but are one place better off in eighth due to a superior goal difference in the early standings.
