Mourinho: No issues with Perez

Jose Mourinho has insisted he has a strong relationship with Florentino Perez after the club president said the Portuguese had "taken a while to understand what Real Madrid is about".

• Jose may manage into his 70s
• Blog: Alonso deserves more praise

Mourinho has courted controversy during his time at the Bernabeu and has had to contend with negative reactions from supporters.

Perez, meeting club members, had said: "Mourinho has taken a while to understand what Real Madrid is about. He was surprised by the club, the people and the fact that the fans whistle at the players and at him.

"He emphasised the fact that he had been at several clubs, in Portugal, Italy and England, but I told him that this is Real Madrid. A truly unique club. The club's expectations are much higher than those of other clubs and if things don't go to plan on the pitch the fans start to whistle. Some players who have come here have failed to understand this concept."

Perez also strongly backed the coach, saying: "The changing room is always full of egos, but Mourinho knows how to handle it. He's the best and everyone in the world would agree with me."

Mourinho, speaking at his press conference on Saturday morning, said he had no issues with Perez.

"I have a great relationship with him, both professionally and personally," he said. "However, as a matter of principle, a coach cannot comment on the content of his discussions with the president."

Mourinho also reacted angrily to a story in Friday's edition of Marca claiming that he did not want Zinedine Zidane to spend time around the first-team as the Frenchman was unwilling to publicly back the manager's often controversial public statements.

The newspaper claimed Zidane had been sidelined and was now only permitted to work with the youth-team.

"He stopped working with the first-team two months ago," Mourinho told the assembled journalists. "He said he wanted to be happier in his work and to take his coaching badges. He's doing the course in France. I don't know how you managed to be so late with this story..."
