Shawcross not affected by England snubs

Stoke manager Tony Pulis is confident Ryan Shawcross will not be mentally scarred by another England snub if he fails to get the call from Roy Hodgson for next month's World Cup qualifiers.

Shawcross, 24, who rejected a Wales call-up to concentrate on his England ambitions, has been touted as a potential replacement for John Terry, following his decision to retire from international football.

With the Chelsea defender in retirement, doubts over whether Rio Ferdinand will be recalled and Phil Jones injured, Shawcross and Tottenham's Steven Caulker are being tipped as potential additions to Hodgson's squad for the games against San Marino and Poland.

Two years after first breaking into his one and only squad under Fabio Capello, Shawcross is still waiting for an England chance and many believe he would have been given one by now if he was playing for a more 'fashionable' club.

Pulis believes his captain deserves his chance, but will not be adversely affected if it does not come next month.

"Ryan just needs a chance. If he gets it, then brilliant and I'm sure he'll take it. If he doesn't, then he will just soldier on," Pulis said. "I don't think it affects him. He hasn't been selected yet and his performances have been very good. Roy has managed in the Premier League, so he knows Ryan.

"If he thinks he's good enough for England then great. If not, that's up to Roy and is fine with me. Roy has to pick what he thinks is best and I think he will look at (Phil) Jagielka, (Joleon) Lescott, (Gary) Cahill and people like that.

"Ryan's start has probably been as good as any he's had with us so far, including the first year he came to the football club. He's done exceptionally well and got gradually better year after year after year.

Pulis is as confident in Shawcross' international ability as he is in Stoke's ability to retain the services of the defender, signed from Manchester United for £1.5 million.

Moving to another club with a higher profile may improve Shawcross' profile, but Pulis feels the former United man, who recently completed 200 appearances for the club, is committed to life at the Britannia Stadium.

"He's happy here. He's captain here, well integrated into the team and a lot of players respect him and look up to him, yet he's only a young lad," Pulis added. "He's a good family man with a lovely wife, lovely children and he comes from a good background. He's smashing."
