Warnock: I'm no troublemaker

Stephen Warnock feels he has been unfairly branded a troublemaker after the way he was treated by Paul Lambert at Aston Villa.

Warnock, 30, believes the stigma of being forced to train with the club's development squad, before moving to Bolton Wanderers on loan to kick start his career has cast a cloud over his reputation.

The full-back, who cost Villa £8 million, reluctantly accepts his career at the club is over, but is disappointed by the sour taste left by the circumstances of his departure.

"I'm not a troublemaker or anything like that, so I'd like to think I could have trained with the first team, but that's the manager's decision and he has his own way of doing things," Warnock said.

"I think the way I look at it now is that my time at Villa has probably passed, so things have to move on. Alan Hutton and myself had been deemed surplus to requirement. It was difficult but you've got to respect the fact each manager makes his own decisions."

Warnock has signed an emergency three-month loan deal and would rather try to rebuild his career than sit out the last 12-months of his reported £45,000-a-week contract at Villa Park.

The former Liverpool and Blackburn player does not want to rest on his laurels and is hoping to impress Owen Coyle sufficiently to earn a long-term deal.

"It's up to me to prove I can earn a contract here, be part of the manager's plans, and be here longer term," he added.

"As soon as you get told you're surplus to requirements, you are a footballer and you want to get out and play football. I could have sat on the rest of my contract and seen it out but I'm not that type of person.

"I want to play games and whether that meant dropping down a level, then so be it. I want to get back enjoying it and hopefully that will happen here."
