Pardew signs eight-year Newcastle deal

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has been rewarded for his efforts on Tyneside with a new eight-year deal.

• MacDonald: Ashley is here to stay
• Blog: A real sign of faith

Assistant manager John Carver, coach Steve Stone and goalkeeping coach Andy Woodman have also committed their futures to the club until 2020. Chief scout Graham Carr had signed an eight-year deal over the summer.

Pardew took over at St James' Park in December 2010, following the sacking of Chris Hughton, and took a team lying in mid-table to one that just missed out on Champions League qualification last season.

Backed by an excellent scouting system, the former West Ham boss brought in a raft of top quality signings, including Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse, guiding his team to fifth place and Europa League qualification.

Pardew revealed: "I was shocked when Mike first suggested it. To see what will happen in the next eight years is difficult. But this is probably the best chance I've got of winning a trophy. This gives us a chance to do that.

"I can also look at the club on a whole right down to the Academy. Realistically these players will come to me so it is important. It isn't just young players, it is signing good players. We showed that with Coloccini. We also have Graham Carr and our backroom staff so we can move forward now."

Newcastle United's managing director Derek Llambias said: "If you look at clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal, Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have shown that stability gives you the best platform to achieve success and that is the model we wish to emulate here.

"We're looking to build on the success we had last season and these new contracts are aimed at keeping the Club progressing on and off the pitch, as we have done since returning to the Premier League in 2010.

"Alan has done a fantastic job over the last couple of years and has proved what a great Premier League manager he is. I have total respect for him in all football matters and have an excellent relationship with him which I think benefits the club enormously. Alan also has one of the best backroom teams in the country and I would like to thank John Carver, Steve Stone, and Andy Woodman for all their combined efforts.

"We hope this announcement will be great news for the fans, whose support and commitment to this club over the years has been fantastic."

Pardew picked up both the LMA and Premier League manager of the year awards last season.
