Barcelona chief confirms Xavi interest

Barcelona president Sandro Rosell said his team "will do everything we possibly can" to retain midfielder Xavi Hernandez at the club for the rest of his career.

"We would like him to hang up his boots with the club," Rosell told reporters Tuesday night in New York while attending philanthropic activities. "He is a historic players who is going to meet all participation records."

Hernandez, an integral part of both the Barca and Spain sides, has two years left on his contract with a two-year renewal option. On Tuesday his agent, Ivan Corretja confirmed that th e 32-year-old is seeking contract renewal and hinted that Barcelona wants to extend the deal.

"The club communicated to us last Friday its intention to renew the contract because they want Xavi to continue with the team, keeping in mind that the current contract concludes in 2014," Corretja told Esport3. "So it is normal that we would begin to discuss this subject because in June it would be too late."

Xavi is the most decorated Spanish player in history, having won the Primera Division, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, the Spanish and the UEFA Super Cup on multiple occasions with the Catalan club and also lifted the European Championship (twice) and the World Cup in 2010 with Spain.

Xavi continues to flourish in midfield alongside Andres Iniesta. While Corretja did not elaborate on the length of the deal, he does not foresee too many complications.

"We have always agreed in previous talks and there have never been problems of any kind. For the player it is very important to know that the club remains confident in him. Therefore I do not think there is any problem," he told television network Esport3.
