Cleverley itching to add firepower

Tom Cleverley is aiming to open his Manchester United account as he urged his fellow midfielders to chip in with 30 goals this season.

Cleverley is targeting a first United goal after 18 games and believes his deep-lying role at Old Trafford has been a factor in his drought.

But England international, who was deployed as a No. 10 by England in the World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine and Moldova, is confident that he has the ability in the final third to end his wait.

"Things have been going really well but I just want them to get even better," he told the club's official website. "I want to keep playing, keep winning and hopefully start scoring. I know I've got a few goals in me. Hopefully my first arrives soon."

United's central midfielders have been criticised for not scoring often enough in recent years and only managed 14 goals in all competitions last season, with Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes both getting four and Anderson, Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher finishing with two apiece.

Scholes and teenager Nick Powell are already off the mark for the current campaign, along with Shinji Kagawa, who plays in a more advanced position.

And Cleverley added: "If the midfield can chip in with 30 goals this season it will be a massive help to the team."

The 23-year-old has not featured in United's last three games, but said: "My season started with the Olympics, which was a great experience. Unfortunately we didn't get a medal but it was good for me to play those games and I was pleased with my form there.

"I managed to carry that form into the season with United and hopefully I've impressed the manager as well. I've also picked up three international caps, so it's been a great start."

After starting out as an attacking midfielder, he believes he has shown more defensive responsibility this season.

"I feel like I've played a little deeper," he explained. "I always watch the games back and I've noticed I've been intercepting and tackling a bit more than usual. I've been happy with that but that's not something that's going to affect my play."
