Martinez wants Kone service

Roberto Martinez has urged his Wigan team to adapt to get the most out of summer signing Arouna Kone.

The Ivorian scored his second Wigan goal in Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Fulham but Martinez believes there is more to come from his £4 million signing.

Kone scored 15 times in La Liga for Levante last season and his manager believes the former PSV Eindhoven and Sevilla striker has the pace and power to get in behind opposition defences.

"Arouna is a top goalscorer," he said. "If anything, we need to develop an understanding of his play and the players around him to get the best out of his ability. He's a powerful player."

Martinez feels Kone can make an immediate impact if his new team-mates can provide him with service.

"He's ready," said the Spaniard. "He's experienced. He's played in Holland, Germany and Spain already."

Kone struck in injury time on Saturday and was denied an earlier goal when he accelerated away from the Fulham defence, only to be denied by goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer, but Martinez believes the chance showed his threat.

He added: "It was a real surprise when he missed the one on one with Schwarzer because he's very clinical in those positions. But you can count on Arouna because he's always in the right place and never runs away from the places that as a striker you need to be in to have chances."
