Villas-Boas: Lloris must wait for chance

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has left France captain Hugo Lloris in little doubt that he is in for an extended stint on the substitutes bench this season.

• Lloris pleased with Spurs debut

Lloris has been left stunned by his position as second choice keeper at Spurs following his move from Lyon last month, with French national team coach Didier Deschamps's suggestion that his international place will be under threat unless he is playing regular first team football piling further pressure on the 25-year-old keeper.

However, Spurs boss Villas-Boas clearly has no intention of dropping the in-form Brad Friedel any time soon, with the veteran American again in impressive form as Spurs ground out a 2-1 win against QPR on Sunday.

"We've made Hugo alert that whenever Brad has a bad game we won't pull a change," the Tottenham manager said. "These things need to be taken very carefully, but we don't bow to Hugo's dimension and talent.

"At the moment we are paying respect for a player who is performing very well and at the right time, we will think about it. Hugo is an extremely good professional. He wants to come back but he is competing with Brad for the position. He will have his chance very soon."

After his two goal brace against Reading the weekend before, Jermain Defoe was Tottenham's match winner once again against QPR and Villas-Boas suggests he is proving his doubters wrong by shining as the lone striker in his 4-5-1 formation.

"Some people question whether Defoe can play up front on his own, but he is scoring and enjoying his football," he said. "He has confidence as a striker and we are very grateful we can use this confidence at this moment."
