Cagliari v Roma game called off

The Serie A match between Cagliari and Roma - due to be held on Sunday afternoon - has been called off by the local government and police amid safety concerns surrounding the Is Arenas in Sardinia.

After their Stadio Sant'Elia was deemed unfit to host official matches, Cagliari moved to the new location but it once again failed to pass the pre-requisite safety and security standards.

The game had been due to be played behind closed doors, but President Massimo Cellino then released a statement on the official Cagliari website inviting season ticket holders to ignore that ban as he deemed it "perfectly adequate to host a crowd.

An emergency meeting of the Cagliari Prefecture and local police chiefs took the decision, fearing what may happen were fans to be denied entry, issuing a statement which read; "This decision was forced by the urgent and grave need to prevent any form of public order concern caused by the emotive, irrational and ill-advised reaction of the Cagliari Calcio President."

The Lega Calcio must now decide whether to reschedule the match or to award a 3-0 victory to Roma, in line with rules for preventing it from going ahead as planned.
