Ballack close to A-League move - report

Michael Ballack could become the latest European star to join the Australian A-League with the former Chelsea midfielder in talks with Western Sydney Wanderers, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Ballack, 35, spent four years at Chelsea before rejoining Bayer Leverkusen, the club which propelled him to stardom in 1999, but he did not earn a new contract at the Bundesliga side in the summer and is now a free agent.

After A-League clubs attracted attention for their pursuit of Emile Heskey (Newcastle Jets) and Alessandro Del Piero (Sydney FC), now the Daily Telegraph understands that Ballack is keen to move Down Under, although no contract has yet been offered.

Wanderers chairman Lyall Gorman cooled talk of any deal on Tuesday night, saying: "A-League clubs talk to lots of player agents about lots of different players. We don't provide a running commentary on these talks and we won't offer confirmations or denials every time a rumour surfaces.''

Western Sydney Wanderers are a new club to join the A-League for the upcoming 2012-13 season, based in Parramatta, and are currently owned by Football Federation Australia.

Ballack, once viewed as the one of the best central midfielders in the world, played 98 times for Germany, including the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, before injury and a clash with coach Joachim Low ended his international career.
