Baldini reveals €100m Roma offers

Franco Baldini has revealed that Roma turned down offers totalling up to €100m for Daniele De Rossi and several other players over the summer.

De Rossi, 29, was one of Roberto Mancini's biggest summer transfer targets and it was widely reported that Manchester City made a bid for the player.

But Baldini, Roma's general director, indicated that the club also had to turn down bids for a number of their other players.

"We turned down several offers for De Rossi and other players worth a total €100m," he told Sky Italia.

Baldini also discussed the managerial change at the club that saw the arrival of Zdenek Zeman in July.

"We chose Zdenek Zeman because we wanted a man who would not only win in a cynical manner, as history shows," he said. "We wanted to change the story of football and he seemed to be the ideal person for the job. We want a coach who wins and doesn't just do the bare minimum."

Fabio Capello's former England assistant defended the Czech coach, who's outspoken opinions have caused controversy since his arrival in Rome.

"His opinions are understandable and there is no difference in viewpoints between the club and the coach," he said. "You journalists stirred up the controversy, as every opinion given in a general sense becomes targeted. We knew that we were hiring this type of character."

Roma currently sit seventh in Seria A after three games, including a 3-1 victory over Inter Milan.
