Albrighton ready for Villa return

Marc Albrighton has said he hopes to return to Paul Lambert's first team plans at Aston Villa next month.

Albrighton, 22, has been sidelined for three months with a stress fracture of the foot, an injury he suffered on the first day of pre-season.

The England Under-21 international has been given permission to return to full training and expects to be in contention for a place in Lambert's squad for the trip to Spurs on October 7.

"Hopefully I will have a couple of weeks to get sharp and then I can get going again," Albrighton said. "It's a dream to be back.

"I have been doing full training with the group. I had a few sessions with the fitness coach and the physios previously, and it went fine. Touch wood, I'm back now."

Frustrated Albrighton says it has been a "nightmare" being out so long and not having the chance to impress new manager Lambert.

It is more likely that he will have to wait longer than a couple of weeks for that opportunity, with Villa likely to wait until after the next round of World Cup qualifiers, on October 12 and 16, to re-introduce him.

Albrighton said he might not have had such a delayed start to the new season if he had not attempted to train through the injury when it first happened.

"I did it running down the wing in training. I went to pass the ball, changed direction and ended up with a stress fracture in my foot," he explained.

"I trained on it for a week because I didn't know I had done anything. It kept getting worse each day, and when I went for a scan it came back that I had a stress fracture. It was a bolt from the blue. It was a shock.

"It's been so frustrating. But it's just a setback, a little knock in reality, and nothing to get too down about. I will get back on the horse and go again."
