Lindegaard: We must cut out errors

Manchester United goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard wants to see the team cut out the defensive mistakes which cost them a place in the Champions League knockout rounds last season.

United were expected to cruise through a group which featured Benfica, FC Basel and Otelul Galati last season but dropped into the Europa League.

This season they are also expected to advance past Braga, Galatasaray and CFR Cluj without too much trouble - but Lindegaard is well aware that United cannot be complacent.

Lindegaard, who kept his place in the United starting XI against Wigan Athletic at the weekend in place of David De Gea, said: "We have to do better. Anything else will be very disappointing, as it was last season.

"I think we got too careless. In a couple of games, especially against Basel at home [drawing 3-3], it was very annoying for us. That was the tendency last season. We had the game in our hands and we threw it away.

"The fact is we didn't go through and we were very disappointed, and we have to make it right. For whatever reason that was, we cannot afford to do that again this season."

Despite taking the place of De Gea, who manager Sir Alex Ferguson felt was at fault in the 3-2 win over Fulham, Lindegaard does not believe there is a true rivalry between the two goalkeepers.

"He has his strengths and I have mine and the gaffer is world-class at picking the right teams and I trust in that and I accept his decision," Lindegaard said. "At this point I see David's and my roles as co-workers rather than No. 1 and No. 2.

"I am happy to play. It is amazing to play in front of this crowd [at home]. It is so historical so I'm just happy to play whenever I can."

Patrice Evra is set to be recalled against Galatasaray on Wednesday evening after being rested for the win over Wigan. Alexander Buttner will return to the bench despite making a goalscoring debut for the Red Devils.

With the exception of Wayne Rooney, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, United look like being at full strength for the visit of the Turkish side.
