Van der Wiel: Not at PSG to be No. 2

New Paris Saint-Germain signing Gregory van der Wiel has stated he has not moved to the French capital just to sit on the bench.

Van der Wiel, 24, signed for the club from Ajax for €6 million but he finds himself in direct competition with the team's captain, Christophe Jallet, for a right-back starting berth.

The Dutch international will be watching from the sidelines on Friday night as his new side take on Toulouse, due to an injured groin, but he is adamant that it will not be a regular occurrence when he has returned to full fitness.

"I came here to play and not to be No. 2," van der Wiel said. "But this competition for places is good and it will allow me to be even better. There will be a great competition between us."

And despite coming up against the club's captain for a place in the team, the former Ajax man is confident enough in his own abilities.

"Yes, captain Jallet is good but I do not care. I am aware of my own qualities," he said. "I hope Christophe will play well, he just scored with the France team. I'm happy for him because he is now my team-mate. It does not add pressure to me but of course, I want to be No. 1."

Van der Wiel should make a swift return from injury and could even make his debut for PSG when they take on Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Club boss Carlo Ancelotti is looking forward to his new signing's return and believes the competition for places can only be a good thing for the side.

"This is the logic of the big clubs. The competition is a good thing," he said. "There is competition to the right, left and centre. All players start to have the same level and I have to decide who to pick match by match. Jallet is very professional, he knows very well the purpose of the club is to be competitive."
