Bentley could extend stay in Russia

David Bentley has hinted that he may be prepared to stay at FC Rostov beyond the expiry of his loan deal in January.

Bentley, 28, joined the Russian club on a six-month deal last week after Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas made it clear the midfielder would not be getting any first-team football at White Hart Lane.

Rostov is a surprise destination for a player who moved to Spurs from Blackburn in 2008 for £15 million and was touted as David Beckham's replacement for England.

But despite the club sitting fourth from bottom in the Russian league Bentley says he could stay for an extended period should things work out at the club.

"Long term, we will see what happens,'' Bentley told Sky Sports. "I am going there to hopefully enjoy my football. If things work out, then we will see what happens from there.''

Bentley featured for Tottenham in pre-season under Villas-Boas but the Portuguese boss later decided he was surplus to requirements in north London - a familiar feeling for the player.

"You always hope, but there has been a lot of water under the bridge at Tottenham with me," Bentley said. "I had the injury last year, I was out for a season, and there were a lot of good players there ahead of me. You always live with that hope in pre-season but it was not to be. I am looking to play some games and we will see where we go from there.''
